African-Eurasian Flyway
In the African-Eurasian Flyway we work closely with the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement and we support strengthening waterbird monitoring along the East Atlantic, the Black Sea – Mediterranean and the West Asian – East African flyways. Our work is coordinated by the Strategic Working Group of the African-Eurasian Waterbird Monitoring Partnership which is responsible for coordinating waterbird monitoring activities and decides on the regional use of the Waterbird Fund.
Our partners lead the waterbird monitoring capacity building components of the Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative focusing on the East Atlantic Flyway, the Mediterranean Waterbirds, the Adriatic Flyway Initiative, Barr al-Hikman management plan development and the RESSOURCE Project focusing on the Black Sea Mediterranean Flyway and the Waterbird Fund aims to assist maintaining the capacity built during these projects after they ended. We are also developing new initiatives to fill the gaps in the Black Sea, the Caspian, Southwest Asia and East Africa.

Flyway initiatives underway
- Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative: International approach to the management of the entire Wadden Sea area of Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands
- Mediterranean Waterbirds: Management of a network between all partners involved in the conservation of waterbirds in the Mediterranean
- Adriatic Flyway Campaign: Protection of migratory birds from the pressures of hunting and poaching
- Together for migratory birds along Atlantic coast of Africa: Developing a regional capacity for the monitoring and conservation of shorebirds and other threatened migratory waterbirds along the Atlantic coast of Africa, with a focus on Mauritania, Senegal and Guinea Bissau
- Barr Al Hikman, Oman: Since 2016 a monitoring initiative has been under development to lay the basis for designation of this critical site as a Ramsar site and for the development of a management plan. Barr Al Hikman is one of the most important sites for shorebirds in the West Asian – East African Flyway, one of the least well-known flyways in the world.
